Located along 33rd street on the University of Pennsylvania campus is one of the most historic stadiums in the nation, Franklin Field. Opened in 1895 for the first edition of the Penn Relays, Franklin Field was expanded twice, in 1922 and 1925, and now seats 52,593. Over the past century Franklin Field has witnessed plenty of history and has hosted the nation’s best track athletes every spring at the Penn Relays. The Relays were eventually featured in the April 29, 1961 premiere of ABC’s Wide World of Sports. Franklin Field is also home to Penn’s football, sprint football, field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s track and field teams. It was the home of the Philadelphia Eagles from 1958 through 1970, which included the 1960 NFL Championship Game, as the Eagles defeated the Green Bay Packers, 17-13, in Packers’ coach Vince Lombardi’s only career playoff loss. The historic stadium has been deemed the oldest stadium still hosting football games by the NCAA, and has been the site of numerous NCAA events including the 1998 field hockey championship and the 2007 women’s lacrosse championship. Penn also hosts its graduation ceremonies and Spring Fling concerts at the stadium.

Franklin Field was the first stadium in the country to have a scoreboard and the first two-tiered stadium. The first ever football radio broadcast took place at the field in 1922, and the first ever television broadcast of football also ran from the stadium in 1939. SprinTurf was installed in 2004 and an electronic scoreboard and video board are other modern updates to the stadium. Franklin Field was also used for the filming of the movies Unbreakable and Invincible.
